Ordesa - Kenny Wheeler, Stan Sulzmann, John Parricelliordesa

ORDESA

Kenny Wheeler (trumpet/Flugelhorn)
John Parricelli (Electric/Acoustic Guitars & Guitar Synth)
Stan Sulzmann (soprano/tenor saxophones flute)

Internationally recognised ECM favourite Kenny Wheeler joins forces with two of the UK’s extraordinarily gifted musicians - Stan Sulzmann’s distinctive and masterly saxes and the consistently lauded guitars of John Parricelli. Three composers who perform - three performers who compose. Take your pick with this exquisite, distinguished threesome.

Kenny Wheeler (trumpet/flugelhorn)
Kenny Wheeler is a musician of brilliance and technical genius able to play his instrument with complete mastery in any register from its lowest note to its highest. Though appearing reserved, his idiosyncratic style radiates not only technical virtuosity, but also an incredible degree of musical authority. A permanent member of the Dave Holland’s Quintet in the 1980’s and then a member of the all star quintet of Dave Holland, John Abercrombie, John Taylor and Peter Erskine, Kenny Wheeler’s name is synonymous with the finest and most tasteful interpretations in modern European jazz worldwide.

Stan Sulzmann (alto sax, tenor sax, flute)
Stan Sulzmann is without question one of the most highly respected musicians in the UK today, admired by musicians and audiences for his instantly recognisable sound, and boundless creative imagination, and is a source of inspiration to many of Britain's emerging young musicians.

An accomplished and distinguished composer, Stan's writing talents are internationally recognised, and have most recently found expression in writing for Ordesa, and the Stan Sulzmann Big Band. His music has been described in glowing terms 'ravishing, delicious, powerful and direct…meticulously written, sometimes echoing the imaginative and much missed orchestra of Michael Gibbs' (The Guardian)
'Sulzmann - the classy composer'. (John Fordham).

John Parricelli (guitar)
John Parricelli was one of the founder members of Loose Tubes in the 80’s, touring and recording three albums. Since then he has become the guitarist of choice for many – including Kenny Wheeler, Andy Sheppard, Iain Bellamy, Norma Winstone, Lee Konitz, Eddie Parker, the WDR Big Band with Vince Mendoza, Mark Lockheart, Annie Whitehead and Gerard Presencer. His own compositions overflow with his strong sense of melody and texture, such as the wistfully beautiful ‘Ordesa’ which gives the trio their name.
‘his music is a model of thoughtful, tuneful good taste’

Press…..
‘When I first heard of this trio, I wondered if the lack of a traditional rhythm section would limit it. But after this uncompromising concert, I’d venture that this may be the strongest new band in Britain today.’ Independent August 2002

"Don’t look to this trio for hummable tunes. Wheeler on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Sulzmann on flute, tenor and soprano saxes, pitch themselves away from the obvious as a matter of course. Does any other British player refresh the ear like Wheeler? His recordings are always stimulating, while his watery blustery romantic tone poses questions with no easy answers. No flashy tricks; this is brain food jazz". Independent on Sunday July 2002
